Susan Sontag "On Photography" 1977

"...image-making at its origins...was a practical, magical activity, a means of appropriating or gaining power over something. The further back we go in history...the less sharp is the distinction between images and real things...the thing and its image were simply two different, that is, physically distinct, manifestations of the same energy or spirit."

Starting Off On The Wrong Foot

When I initially started on my project, I thought I wanted to do something about the "Digital Divide" between affluent families and families from low SES backgrounds. But unfortunately I could not come up with a way to study this because it is hard to watch someone not do something.

So when Genesis spoke about intergenerational contact in the gaming world, I started to think of intergenerational contact on FB. I use FB to IM my younger daughter when she and I are in our respective jobs in Findlay and Philly, and many of my two daughters' friends have "friended" me as well. So I posted a question on FB asking how many of the people my posts go to (friends & friends of friends can see me) use FB to interact with their parents and/or children. I got 22 responses in a few days!

Now I want to take it another step and ask some more questions of specific responders, especially about privacy issues and topics of communication. I am also curious about how many parents got into FB in the beginning just to be able to communicate with their kids and how many parents started on FB independatly of their children. The other side is, how do the children feel about parents on FB? I welcome your input because most of the research seems to be on peer-to-peer inaction.
