Susan Sontag "On Photography" 1977

"...image-making at its origins...was a practical, magical activity, a means of appropriating or gaining power over something. The further back we go in history...the less sharp is the distinction between images and real things...the thing and its image were simply two different, that is, physically distinct, manifestations of the same energy or spirit."

FB Responses

Here are some of the responses I got to my FB query: "How many of you are FB friends with your parents and/or children?" The responses arrived in two or three days, and some were from friends of friends who I did not know. Apparently, it is a topic of interest. Most of the comments were from parents and were positive. The one negative response came from Scott who vehemently rejected the idea of being on FB with his parents.

Amanda
i am a FB friend of my mom and dad, mother in law, gramma and a whole bunch of aunts and cousins.....lol
Martha
All My Children, their friends, their ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends. Many cousins. Ex-husband. But there are rules imposed on me. I am not permitted to comment on any photos of the kids until they have been posted for seven days. And nothing ever goes on their Walls. Oh, and I am not allowed any one-on-one conversations with the current boyfriends or girlfriends.
Paula
I am facebook friends with my children, former students, peers. For the longest time I thought someone my age on fb was kind of creepy. Now I see it as a great way to keep in touch with people. Neither my dad nor Sam's mom are fbers, but my 93-year-old mother-in-law has a cell phone and knows how to get pictures on it, which I find amazingly cool. I hope to keep up with new tech as well as she does! She is inspirational in so many ways.
